I made a way to (sort of) read the Odyssey in Greek without all those years of learning Greek first.

I’ve had a deep interest in reading great literature in its original language since I studied Latin in High School, but wanted to find ways of reading real literature quickly. I’ve used this method myself to read books in several languages including Italian, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Greek. You still have to do the grammar and vocabulary study over time to really comprehend it, but this method has worked far better than all my previous attempts. The goal is to eventually be able just to read the language without any aids, but do that while reading real stuff the entire time. I’ve found that I go from needing help on everything, to learning individual words, to phrases, and then gradually I get to understanding whole sentences without looking anything up. Using a translation helps to keep me honest.

I made a little demo of some lines from the Odyssey Book 1 to share the method and see if other people might find it useful. This is a special version that has a lot of explanation to see if something as difficult as Homeric Greek can be approached from 0. The interlinear translation and notes are AI generated though I made sure to ground them in real translations and existing grammatical tags. The commentary won't be as good as an actual Classical scholar's work and can be overly simplistic, but I'm hoping it's enough to get started. There are other versions that feature progressive grammar learning and identification as well as flashcards. If people are interested I'm happy to share the rest of the book or other texts I've made and read myself. I have the New Testament in Greek and then a bunch of other works in lots of ancient and modern languages.
